One
of a series of works depicting 'totem animals' and their relationship
with the external and internal landscape. These paintings are not drawn
from one particular tradition - they incorporate elements of Celtic, Native
American, Australian Aboriginal and other belief systems which have as
a linking factor the close relationship between man and the natural environment.
The Stag, "Monarch of the Glen", could be seen as an aspect
of the Celtic woodland Gods such as Cernunnos. Its antlers represented
the Tree of Life. It symbolises spiritual regeneration and the masculine
side of Nature's balance. The appearance of a white stag could indicate
nearness of the Otherworld as a warning of the beaking of a geas (taboo)
or heralding the start of a quest. |
